The courts should attach special importance to removing shortcomings in their work, limiting the need to correct or overturn erroneous verdicts.

The statement was made by State President Nguyen Minh Triet at a meeting held in Hanoi on January 25 discussing the sector’s tasks for this year.

These are issues with which the whole society is deeply concerned, stressed the President while pointing out some of the sector’s weaknesses.

Triet also reminded the judiciary of its serious shortage of staff, especially in the Central Highlands and southern provinces, and the limited expertise of officials working in courts.

The sector this year is tasked with continuing to speed up the trial process to reduce the number of trials that need to be suspended because they have waited too long to come before the court.

Last year, the courts at all levels handled over 294,000 criminal and civil cases and tried more than 272,000 cases./.
