Two thousand students washed their hands with soap at the same time in Ha Dong Stadium on Oct. 15 to mark the World Hand Washing With Soap Day (October 15).

On the occasion, a communication programme was launched nation-wide by the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Unilever Fund with an aim to improve awareness on the importance of hand washing in disease prevention.

“A half of 10 transmitted diseases with the highest infection rate are respiratory and digestive diseases. These diseases relate to safe water, the environment and personal hygiene, and the habit of washing hands with soap has played a key role in disease prevention,” said Director of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Environment Nguyen Huy Nga.

However, Nga said, a survey conducted by the department in 2006 showed that in some provinces the rate of people who regularly wash their hands was only 12 percent.

“The habit of hand washing with soap should be integrated into environmental hygiene and safe water programmes or schooltraining programmes,” added Nga.

The event also marks a new Vietnamese record as representatives of ministries and branches, administrative units, local and international organisations and two thousand people washed their hands at the same time in Hanoi .

A painting contest on the theme “personal hygiene and community health – For a healthy Vietnam ” was also launched for students in primary and secondary schools nationwide./.
