A national flagpole will be built by students on Tho Chu island, southern Kien Giang province, to raise their sense of responsibility to protect the country’s sea and island sovereignty.
This forms part of the “Students towards the nation’s sea and islands 2014” programme from May 15-18, with the participation of 900 students nationwide.
In its May 12 announcement, the Vietnam Students’ Association said the programme responds to the 2014 Volunteer Youth Year and the year’s Sea and Island Week slated for June 1-8.
The students are set to join in environmental clean-up activities on Phu Quoc and Tho Chu islands and repair local schools.
Besides, they will be equipped with knowledge on the Law of the Sea of Vietnam, the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC).
Initiatives and solutions to boost socio-economic development in the country’s sea and islands and environmental protection as well as support fishermen will be highlighted in the programme.-VNA
