The Vietnam Summer Camp 2014 officially kicked off in the northern coastal province of Quang Ninh on July 11 with the nation’s sea and islands being the centrepiece.

Joining the annual event, organised by the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs (COVA), are some 170 outstanding young overseas Vietnamese from around the globe.

Deputy Foreign Minister and COVA Chairman Bui Thanh Son said the camp offers an opportunity for overseas Vietnamese youth to gain an insight of their homeland’s sea sovereignty, patriotism and solidarity, thus helping nurture their pride of and love for the country.

At the opening ceremony, participants joined their fellows from Quang Ninh in games and singing performances about their beloved country’s sea and islands.

The young expatriates also took a tour around the world’s natural heritage Ha Long Bay.

They will travel across Vietnam and engage in a series of activities from now until July 27.-VNA
