Super-typhoon Haiyan is moving fast into the East Sea and will strike the central provinces on the night of November 10. It is forecast to be the most powerful ever over the past 10 years.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on November 7 issued Notice No. 1816/CD-TTg, requesting ministries and agencies concerned to get fully prepared.

The People’s Committees of coastal cities and provinces were asked to keep a close watch over the situation while urgently calling on vessels in danger zone to come ashore or take refuge.

Central localities, from Thanh Hoa to Binh Dinh, must instruct vessels to travel to safety areas while devising plans to relocate locals in and around areas prone to flood and landslide to higher grounds.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will be responsible for inspecting and protecting dykes, dams and other irrigational works.

The Ministry of Public Security will work with the Ministry of Transport to regulate traffic on National Highway 1 and Ho Chi Minh trail.

Meanwhile, the National Committee for Search and Rescue was asked to make sure forces are in a state of preparedness.

Other relevant units must ensure that electrical transmission system and hydropower lakes work properly while food and medicines will be available for aid relief.

The southern provinces of Ca Mau, Dong Nai and the Central Highland provinces were also braced for the hurricane.

In the next 24 hours, Haiyan will move between west and west-northwest at a speed of about 35 kilometres per hour (kph).

It will move west-northwest with sustained winds of 150-183 kph in the next 48-72 hours.-VNA
