Up to 440 lawmakers, or 89.07 percent of the total, approved the nomination of 15 judges to the Supreme People’s Court during a plenary session in Hanoi on June 26.

Addressing the event, National Assembly (NA) Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung said the nomination will raise the number of Council of Judges members to 16 in accordance with the Law on People’s Court Organisation.

Candidates won 60-90 percent approvals, he said, adding that it is also regarded as a vote of confidence.

Earlier, a majority of legislators voted yes to start the nomination approvals.

Member of the NA Standing Committee and Chairman of the NA Office Nguyen Hanh Phuc delivered a report summarising feedback on the nomination proposal by Chief Judge of the Supreme People’s Court.

In the afternoon, the legislature is due to ratify a resolution on strengthening measures to prevent and combat wrongful convictions and compensation for victims in criminal procedure and an additional resolution on question-and-answer sessions.

Later, it will convene a closing session that will be televised nationwide.-VNA
