The central province of Quang Nam is speeding up the construction of suspension bridges to ensure safe travel for people in mountainous areas, especially in the rainy season.

These bridges are part of the Ministry of Transport’s plan to build suspension bridges in 28 provinces in the northern, central and Central Highlands regions. Priority is given to building bridges in mountainous districts where inhabitants are mainly ethnic minority people.

Accordingly, 14 suspension bridges with a total length of 1,200m in Quang Nam are expected to put into operation before the rainy season, which begins from September. They are built with a total investment of 63 billion VND (about 3 million USD).

The province has asked for financial assistance worth nearly 51 billion VND (2.4 million USD) from the ministry and the National Road Maintenance Fund to repair 44 existing bridges and construct several new ones in areas prone to floods.

According to statistics from the provincial Transport Department, there are a total of 136 suspension bridges in need of repair or construction to serve the travel of local people in mountainous areas.-VNA
