More than 100 scientists and natural resource, environment and agriculture managers on June 5 gathered in the central Khanh Hoa province for a symposium on development of breeding swallows in Vietnam.

According to scientists, Vietnam boasts huge potential for breeding swallows thanks to available natural geographical condition such as a long coastal line, hills, cliff and lagoons.

There are 219 natural nesting sites in such central coastal provinces as Khanh Hoa, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Quang Nam , harvesting about 5,000 kg of bird nest a year.

Besides, there are about 2,000 swallow houses with a total annual output of 1,320 kg of bird nest in central and southern regions

Domestic breeding is developing spontaneously without planning and orientation, thus posing risks for swallow farmers and impacts on the development of other sectors. In addition, the harsher natural condition and deforestation are creating critical effects on swallows’ living environment.

The event was a forum for participants to present their reports and research on raising swallows which is still new in Vietnam such as building swallow houses and bird flu preventative measures on domestic swallows.-VNA
