Erosion and subsidence along canals, rivers and coasts have been severe in many areas in the Mekong Delta and local authorities are struggling to raise funds for works to prevent them.
The Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control’s Office on August 6 reported that so far, Storm Wipha has claimed 10 lives and left 11 people missing, destroyed 91 houses and caused great property losses.
The Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre has received 140 billion VND (6.3 million USD) from the Government to repair two embankments to prevent erosion along rivers and upgrade another dyke along the coast.
Severe salt intrusion has resulted in significant damage to the agricultural production of residents living along the coastal dyke system in the Mekong Delta province of Ca Mau.
