Vietnam’s coffee sector may set a new record of 4 billion USD in turnover this year if export value remains high.

The export of coffee declined in both volume and value last year due to certain difficulties that are forecast to linger on for the time to come, insiders have said.

With the Vietnamese coffee industry currently exporting to 80 countries and territories globally, the sector has already stated its ambitions to reach an export turnover of 6 billion USD in 2020, reported the Voice of Vietnam (VOV).

Vietnam has set itself a target of increasing the ratio of processed coffee from the current 10 per cent to 30-40 per cent by 2030 to add value.

Vietnam’s coffee sector needs to have strategies to improve material quality and step up intensive processing to increase export value and incomes for farmers as well as develop Vietnamese coffee brand, said experts at the Vietnam Coffee Week in HCM City on December 4.

Even though Vietnam’s coffee sector has enjoyed fast development in recent years in terms of cultivation area and output, foreign businesses still gain more advantages in the world market.

The global coffee market is estimated at some 500 billion USD per year. However, Vietnam’s coffee exports only reached 3.5 billion last year, a very small proportion of the market

The second Vietnamese Coffee Day took place in Gia Nghia town of the Central Highlands of Dak Nong province on December 10, aiming to promote sustainable development of coffee sector.

A workshop was held in Ho Chi Minh City on December 4 to seek measures for boosting public-private partnerships (PPP) towards sustainably developing Vietnam’s coffee sector – one of the world’s leading coffee exporters.
