A grand requiem for Vietnamese soldiers
who devoted their lives for the nation was held on May 12 at the A1
cemetery in the northwestern province of Dien Bien involving
Buddhists, Vietnamese veterans, local people and overseas Vietnamese.
Over 2,000 dignitaries, monks, nuns and Buddhist followers are attending
a
national Dharma conference which began on May 6 in the southern province
of Kien
Giang.
Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh arrived in Vientiane in the
morning of
April 13, beginning an official friendship visit to Laos at the
invitation of
Lao Party General Secretary and President Choummaly Sayasone.
A Chinese diplomatic delegation headed
by charge d'affaires Zhuo Leiming on April 5 paid tribute to Chinese
martyrs, who sacrificed their lives during Vietnam ’s resistance war
against the US .
A requiem was held in the Central
Highlands province of Kon Tum on March 15 to pray for the souls of
combatants and residents who laid down their lives in the region during
the war.
A solemn meeting was held in the
capital city of Hanoi on Feb. 2 to celebrate the 80th founding
anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) (Feb. 3).
State President Nguyen Minh Triet
received outstanding individuals in the Navy’s emulation drive during
the 2004-2009 period in celebration of the 65th anniversary of the
Vietnam People’s Army on Dec. 22.
National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu
Trong went away to the agriculturally-dominated Bo Duong hamlet in the
Red River delta province of Hai Duong to attend a festival of national
unity on Nov. 14.
The special relationship between
Vietnam and Laos, fostered by Presidents Ho Chi Minh and Kaysone
Phomvihane, is a valuable part of the mutual heritage of the two
nations.
A State-level requiem, the first of its
kind in Vietnam, is scheduled for October 22-24 to pray for soldiers
killed on Lao soil during their war-era international mission.
A number of pressing issues relating to
overseas Vietnamese have been resolved under the Party Politburo’s
Resolution 36, an official from the Committee for Overseas Vietnamese
(COV) has said.
Vietnamese and Lao politicians, war
veterans and historians have recalled common hardship experiences
during two major wars 60 years ago, when soldiers from the two
neighbours shared “every grain of salt and every stalk of vegetables”.

honour Vietnam’s Heroic Mothers began in Tam Ky city in central Quang
Nam province on July 27, War Invalids and Fallen Soldiers Day.
The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) and
the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese (COV) have signed a
cooperation agreement on a programme to meet the demands of Vietnamese
expats who wish to practice religion.
A festival and cultural
exchange entitled “War Memories and a Desire for Peace” will be held in
Quang Tri province, the scene of some fiercest fighting during the US
war, to mark the 62 nd anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs’ Day
(July 27).
