Vietnam exported 6.32 billion USD worth of commodities in the first half of May, a decrease of 9.5 percent compared over the previous fortnight, the General Department of Customs reported.

Meanwhile, the country's imported goods were worth 8.19 billion USD, an increase of 34.7 percent compared to the second half of April.

This meant the country's trade deficit was 1.87 billion USD for the first two weeks of May. This compares to a trade deficit of 3.7 billion USD from the beginning of the year.

The country exported 181,000 tonnes of rice in the first half of May worth 79.87 million USD, lifting the shipment to date this year to 1.932 million tonnes worth 845.38 million USD, according to data from the Vietnam Food Association (VFA).

Vietnam optimistic over guest workers target

Vietnam sent 29,000 workers overseas to take up a variety of occupations in the first five months of this year, an increase of 5 percent over the same period last year. The country now expects to realise its target of exporting 85,000 workers this year.

According to the Department of Overseas Labour Management under the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA), Taiwan topped the list of markets that hire Vietnamese workers, closely followed by the United Arab Emirates, Laos, Japan and Malaysia.
