Efforts are being made toward a goal of expanding the habitat of the grey-shanked douc langur in central Quang Nam province’s Nui Thanh district to 150ha by 2030.

The forestry sector should take swift action to build a project on zoning off and protecting natural forests in the time to come, said Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong.

Central highlands localities need to raise the sense of responsibility among forest owners and management units regarding forestry protection and development, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong said on June 22.

The Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) region aims to raise its forest coverage to 49.2 percent, and forest area to 2.72 million hectares by 2030.

Vietnam will mark four years of natural forest closure this July, a measure to reverse severe deforestation.

Vietnam’s forest area totalled 14.6 million ha in 2019, with a coverage ratio of 41.89 percent, up 117, 925 ha in area and 0.24 percent in coverage against 2018, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Vietnam has over 14.41 million hectares of forest, of which, standardized area is over 13.71 million hectares, with forest coverage ratio of 41.45 percent, according to latest statistics announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc had a meeting with key leaders of the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong, during which he asked for drastic and breakthrough measures to boost the locality’s growth.

Local authorities of the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum have approved a project to grow Ngoc Linh ginseng in Tu Mo Rong district, in a bid to preserve and develop the medicinal plant.

Natural forest area in the Central Highlands region has been declining significantly due to illegal exploitation and deforestation.

Authorities in the southern province of Binh Phuoc have apologised for deforestation violations in the province.

Vietnam had more than 14 million hectares of forest as of December 21, 2015, including over 10.1 million hectares of natural forest and nearly 3.9 million hectares of planted forest.
