Off-season fruit harvests have been poor in most provinces in the Mekong
delta, but prices have risen as export demand soars and sales for Tet
(Lunar New Year) holiday increase.
Hanoi and northern provinces have been suffering biting cold for a week,
which is warned to continue, making flower growers “like to be a cat on
hot bricks” as the biggest holiday is approaching.
The price of dragon fruits sold at orchards has increased to 21,000 VND a
kg since mid –December, the highest in the last 20 years, according to
the Post-Import Plant Quarantine Centre No 2 under the Ministry of
Agriculture and Rural Development.
The Mekong River Delta expects to receive 19 million visitors this year,
200,000 more than last year, according to the regional tourism agency,
the Mekong Delta Tourism Association.
Farmers in the Mekong Delta, the country's largest fruit growing area,
are struggling to sell their produce because local markets are dominated
by Thai imports.

Peach and kumquat growers in Hanoi are
looking forward to a bumper crop as the weather has become rather cold,
with the occasional warm day during the years-end.
Although the Tet (Lunar New Year) festival is still to come, the
kumquat fields have started to turn yellow while the red peach blossoms
are in bud. Many owners of peach orchards in Nhat Tan have gathered
their ornamental trees together and are waiting for buyers.

asked the southern province of Ben Tre to step up the development of
agricultural and industrial production and exports.
