Government workers and civil servants in Ho Chi Minh City have asked for higher salaries in a meeting held by the city People’s Council to listen to their voters’ opinions.

The basic salary for civil servants and public employees will increase to 1.39 million VND (about 61 USD) from the current 1.3 million VND as from July 1, 2018.

People, particularly those working in informal sectors and housewives, are afraid of a possible surge in the prices of goods as soon as the basic salary for civil servants and public employees increases next month.

Vietnam has posted the highest regional increase in minimum wages over the last three years, more than Indonesia and China, but workers still struggle to make ends meet.

The monthly basic salary for civil servants, public employees and those working in the armed forces will be raised to 1.3 million VND (57.16 USD) from July 1.

In a bid to ease payroll pressure on the national budget and improve staff performance, the PM has decided to reduce the number of those on the State payroll by 1.4 percent at all levels next year.

The monthly base salary for civil servants, public employees and those working in the armed forces has been officially stipulated to go up by 5 percent to 1.21 million VND (nearly 54 USD).

The Ministry of Home Affairs has released a draft decree stipulating that the minimum wage for cadres, civil servants, public employees and those working in the armed forces will go up on May 1, 2016.
