The National Assembly (NA)’s Standing Committee has adopted a resolution on additional funding for the purchase of rice to refill the national stockpile.
After the Government took steps to prevent rice prices from falling in February, prices have started to inch up in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta – the granary of Vietnam – though not by much.
Just less than 997,000 tonnes of winter-spring rice in the Mekong Delta
were purchased and stockpiled as of April 14, accounting for 99.7
percent of Vietnam’s 1 million tone target.
The Prime Minister’s Office on February 13 agreed to a proposal on
purchasing 1 million tonnes of rice for stockpile in the context of
abundant supply from the Winter-Spring 2014-2015 crop harvest in the
Mekong Delta region.
Farmers in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang have enjoyed
their most productive rice crop ever, with 2.2 million tonnes harvested
so far this year across 305,856 hectares.
The Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang has so far this year
exported nearly 160,000 tonnes of rice at an average price of 429.47 USD
a tonne, fetching about 67.9 million USD.
The Cambodian Rice Exporters Association was established recently, with
the participation of 100 rice exporters and millers nationwide, aiming
at achieving annual exports of one million tonnes by 2015.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has
directed ministries, sectors, food corporations and the Vietnam Food
Association to develop support for this year’s domestic rice production
and export activities.
Prime Minister has signed a decision to allocate 329.5 billion VND to support
recovery in flood-hit provinces in the central and Central Highlands region.
