Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat has warned of slow implementation of Prime Minister’s Decision on support policies to reduce post-harvest losses in agriculture.
Vietnam earned almost 1.2 billion USD from shipping more than 2.8
million tonnes of rice to foreign markets since the outset of this year,
according to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA).
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has been directing
localities to build plans to convert rice cultivation to other crops or
in combination with aquatic breeding, as well as to improve irrigation
systems, said Minister Cao Duc Phat.
Thai rice exports for the entire year of 2015 is expected to reach 9.5
million tonnes, while the drought disaster has helped in the release of
in-stock rice to feed international market's high demand, says the Thai
Rice Exporters Association President.
The Philippines is unlikely to import any additional rice this year
given its current abundant supply, according to a source from the
country’s Ministry of Agriculture.
The Government will assist residents facing food shortage during
between-crop period in northern Cao Bang province with 430 tonnes of
rice from the national reserve.
The agriculture ministry has called on central and northern provinces
hit by the worst drought in 40 years to encourage a major shift from
rice cultivation to drought-resistant crops.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh has highlighted the
importance of Guangdong province as a big market of Vietnam ’s rice
and agricultural products as well as exports in general, noting that the
province consumes 11.5 percent of Vietnam’s total rice and grain
product exports to China.
The Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute has estimated that
summer-autumn crops of the region would generate 9 million tonnes of
rice this year, up 120,000 tonnes from the same period last year,
despite the reduction in cultivated area.
An irrigation sluice gate officially began operating in the Mekong Delta
province of Ben Tre on June 19, aimed at preventing salinisation and
supplying fresh water for local farmers.
Maize imports in the first five months of 2015 are on the rise but
rice exports are on the decline, according to figures from the Ministry
of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Farmers in the Mekong Delta are harvesting summer-autumn rice, earning
an average profit of 10-15 VND (70-710 USD) per ha, according to the
region’s departments of agricultural and rural development.
Vietnam earned around 875 million USD from shipping nearly 2.1 million
tonnes of rice abroad in the first five months of 2015, posting
year-on-year declines of 10.7 percent in volume and 13.6 percent in
value, according to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA).
Vietnam won a rice supply tender to the Philippines on June 5 with an
offer of 410.12 USD per tonnes, according to the Philippines’ National
Food Authority (NFA).
