Vietnam became a member of the Convention on Wetlands, known as the Ramsar Convention, in 1989. So far, nine wetlands in the country have been recognised as Ramsar sites – wetlands of international importance.
HSBC Vietnam has teamed up with World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) Vietnam in rolling out a project worth 10 billion VND (431,800 USD) to recover submerged forests at the Ca Mau Cape National Park in the southernmost province of Ca Mau.
A drawing competition to raise public awareness of protecting and the importance of expanding submerged forests has been launched for high-school students in coastal provinces nationwide.
The protection of submered forests means conserving the environment in the most sustainable way as they play a key role in coastal erosion prevention, biodiversity protection and livelihood provision, a high-ranking official said on May 31.
The Ben Tre provincial People's Committee has approved a project to prevent erosion, planting 50ha of submerged forests to protect the Thua Duc sea dyke in Binh Dai district.
