Lao Cai (VNA) – The temperature in the resort town of Sapa in the northern province of Lao Cai dropped to 7.7 degrees Celsius in the early morning of December 6, the lowest since the beginning of this winter.
Located 350km northwest of Hanoi, Sa Pa is 1,600m above sea level, with the average temperature of 15-18°C. The whole town is dominated by the Hoang Lien Son mountain range which is famous with the Indochina’s highest mountain of Fansipan at a height of 3,142 m above sea level. The town is among few locations in Viet Nam where snow and ice sometimes appear in winter.
According to the hydro-meteorological station of Lao Cai province, as a strengthened cold spell hit the province at night of December 5, the temperature in areas in the province continue to drop.
At 7 am this morning, the temperature in Lao Cai city was down to 15.7 degrees Celsius, Pho Rang (Bao Yen district) 15.6 degrees Celsius, Bac Ha town 11.5 degrees Celsius.
Local authorities have urged farmers to actively implement measures to cope with the extreme cold to protect their crops and cattle.
The province now has over 44,000 cattle-raising households with a total herd of 127,400. About 78% of the households have proper cattle shelters and 17.8% have makeshift shelters./.
