Lao Cai (VNA) – The temperature in the resort town of Sapa in the northern province ofLao Cai dropped to 7.7 degrees Celsius in the early morning of December 6, thelowest since the beginning of this winter.
Located 350km northwestof Hanoi, Sa Pa is 1,600m above sea level, with the average temperatureof 15-18°C. The whole town is dominated by the Hoang Lien Son mountain rangewhich is famous with the Indochina’s highest mountain of Fansipan at a heightof 3,142 m above sea level. The town is among few locations in Viet Nam wheresnow and ice sometimes appear in winter.
According to thehydro-meteorological station of Lao Cai province, as a strengthened cold spellhit the province at night of December 5, the temperature in areas in the provincecontinue to drop.
At 7 am this morning,the temperature in Lao Cai city was down to 15.7 degrees Celsius, Pho Rang (BaoYen district) 15.6 degrees Celsius, Bac Ha town 11.5 degrees Celsius.
Local authorities haveurged farmers to actively implement measures to cope with the extreme cold toprotect their crops and cattle.
The province now hasover 44,000 cattle-raising households with a total herd of 127,400.About 78% of the households have proper cattle shelters and 17.8% have makeshift shelters./.
