The Thai army has confirmed its stance of protesting third party’s intervention in the settlement of Thailand-Cambodia border disputes.
Addressing a press briefing in Bangkok on April 5, Supreme Commander Songkitti Jaggabatara joined the Army, Navy and Air Force chiefs jointly issued a declaration which stated that the national armed forces will not allow any third country’s representative to act as supervisor at Thailand-Cambodia border area.
The Thai army will not attend the meeting of the Thailand-Cambodia General Border Committee (GBC) slated for April 7-8 in Bogor , Indonesia , according to the joint declaration.
Meanwhile the Thai Foreign Ministry affirmed that Asda Jayanama, who is in charge of the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) will attend a JBC meeting with Cambodian officials in Bogor on April 7-8, despite the fact that Thai parliament has yet to approve documents agreed between Thailand and Cambodia in previous JBC meetings and that the GBC meeting may not take place.
Secretary to Thai Foreign Minister, Chavanond Intarakomalyasut, said Thailand will not sign any document at the upcoming JBC meeting. The two sides will only review the progresses on Cambodia-Thailand land border demarcation.
After the blooding clashes in early February, ASEAN had urged Thailand and Cambodia to restrain themselves and solve the disputes via peaceful measures at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat in Jakarta , Indonesia from Feb. 22-24.
