Thailand’s military junta has drawn up a list of emergency measures to stimulate an economy threatened by recession following months of political turmoil.

The plans, outlined by Air Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong late on June 1 after a meeting with economic officials in Bangkok, include price caps on fuel, loan guarantees for small firms, and the development of special economic zones on the borders with Myanmar, Laos and Malaysia.

Prajin, who is overseeing economic matters for the junta, said he will deliver 30 urgent proposals to the country’s new leader, General Prayuth Chan-ocha, on June 3-4.

Among the suggestions, the Air Chief mentioned a form of price insurance for rice farmers. This will replace a costly buying scheme run under former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra which collapsed when her government was unable to find funding, leaving hundreds of thousands of farmers unpaid for months.

Earlier on May 30, General Prayuth, now self-proclaimed Chairman of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), said the interim government of Thailand will be set up ahead of the 2015 fiscal year, which will begin in October 2014.

Meanwhile, general elections are scheduled to be held in the next 15 months, he added.-VNA
