The Thai cabinet has decided to hold a general election on February 2, 2014.

Thai Government Spokesperson Teerat Ratanasevi said on December 9 that the decision was made at a cabinet meeting just hours after Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawtra announced the dissolution of the House of Representatives and called for an early election to ease the situation.

However, since the early morning, about 140,000 people have gone onto the streets of Bangkok to protest against Yingluck’s government.

Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban declared that protesters are getting ready to forcefully open the compound gate of the Government House.

Suthep is scheduled to give an important speech at the Prime Minister's Office on the evening of December 9.-VNA
