The Thai cabinet has approved plans to develop Mae Sot district of Tak province into a special economic zone to support burgeoning border trade with Myanmar.

The cabinet on January 21 agreed to assign Mae Sot as a pilot economic zone, paving the way for over 10 other districts in the country which have also been proposed as special economic zones.

Tak provincial authorities have submitted a number of budget requests for infrastructure development projects targeting to accommodate the economic expansion in the Thai-Myanmar border area.

The planned development of Mae Sot into a special economic zone is also part of the country’s preparation for the ASEAN Single Window system, which aims to facilitate trade among the ten ASEAN member nations. The single window for the bloc is expected to maximise traders’ efficiency through time and cost savings.-VNA
