The Supreme People’s Court in Ho Chi Minh City on April 4 rejected the appeal of Chimongkol Suaracha – a Thai national – and sentenced the 32-year-old to death for illegally trafficking drugs.
During the first trial, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court heard that Vietnamese authorities had detected nearly 2kg of heroin hidden in two albums in Chimongkol’s luggage as she was entering Vietnam ’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport on October 1, 2012.
The Thai woman, who is a university graduate, had been promised a job at an automobile company in Vietnam by a stranger, before being taken to Brazil, where she met drug dealers and collaborated with them to hide drugs in her luggage and bring them to Vietnam.
Due to the large amount of heroin she transported, the court decided not to overturn the original death sentence.-VNA
