The Thai Government has continued its humanitarian programme to help flood victims in Myanmar.

Thai Deputy Government Spokesman Maj Gen Werachon Sukondhapatipak said on August 11 that the weekly Cabinet meeting has been informed about the meeting between Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Ambassador of Myanmar to Thailand Wunna Maung Lwin on the flood situation in Myanmar.

Ambassador Wunna Maung Lwin told Gen Prayut that the inundation has continued and taken more lives while causing severe damage to millions of acres of land.

He also stated that Myanmar is not only in need of money but also many other things such as tents, dried foods, drinking water and medical supplies.

PM Prayut has promptly ordered a medical team to fly to Myanmar to help flood victims, he said, adding that the premier has also ordered the Foreign Ministry to be on standby to work with Myanmar for any further assistance, if needed.

In addition, the Defence Minister will be working with the Office of the PM to set up a new centre to collect donations from the public.

According to the UN Offi ce for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, at least 103 people have been killed and more than one million have been affected by the flooding in Myanmar .

It is the worst natural disaster in Myanmar since Cyclone Nargis killed nearly 140,000 people in 2008.-VNA
