The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the northern province of Thai Nguyen held a meeting on Sept. 28 to respond to World Rabies Day.

This is a meaningful activity to raise public awareness of rabies and measures to prevent the disease.

Thai Nguyen is one of the provinces in Vietnam affected by rabies. Since 2007, 10 local people have died from rabies and more than 16,000 others have been treated as they have been bitten by an animal suspected to have the disease.

At the meeting, Thai Nguyen’s Steering Committee for Animal Disease Prevention called on the local authorities to closely coordinate with the agriculture and rural development and health sectors in preventing rabies and taking inoculation against rabies for animals.

Rabies is a disease that is caused by a virus. The disease infects domestic and wild animals, and is spread to people through close contact with infected saliva via bites or scratches.-VNA
