Bangkok (NNT/VNA) – Thai Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha claimed that peace talks between the government and southern rebel groups are progressing well, with the ultimate goal of restoring peace and confidence in the violence-torn south.

PM Prayut said on April 1 that a government-appointed team led by Gen Aksara Kerdphol is negotiating terms with southern insurgent groups to establish violence-free zones in residential and economic areas of the south.

Apart from ending violence, peace dialogues also seek to get every side involved in the effort to foster unity and peace, improve the wellbeing of local people, and develop southern communities.

PM Prayut pleaded with the public to have trust and faith in the government, giving an assurance that all terms agreed on will be based on the best interest of the nation and its people.

In the meantime, Gen Aksara has implored members of the press and responsible agencies to familiarize the public with the current situation in the southernmost provinces using facts and reliable information, while asking the public to have confidence in the government’s procedures to bring peace back to the South of Thailand.-VNA
