- Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said on September 28 that former PM Yingluck Shinawatra is currently in the United Arab Emirates (UEA).

She is in Dubai, Prayut told reporters, adding that the Foreign Ministry of Thailand has been tracking Yingluck's whereabouts.

Thai police will coordinate with the Foreign Ministry and Interpol in the work, he said.

Thailand's Supreme Court on September 27 convicted and sentenced in absentia former PM Yingluck to five years in prison for negligence in managing a rice subsidy scheme.

Yingluck failed to appear for her verdict on August 25. Thai police on September 5 publicised evidence that showed Yingluck had left the country. Thailand’s authorities later issued an arrest warrant for the former PM.

Yingluck was accused by the Constitutional Court of Thailand for constitutional violations and abuse of power in May 2014. The Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission charged Yingluck of negligence in managing the rice subsidy programme, causing huge losses for the country.

In January 2015, the National Legislative Assembly of Thailand voted on impeaching Yingluck.

The rice subsidy plan was a flagship election policy that helped Yingluck win in 2011. The scheme paid farmers double market price for their rice and store at the government’s stockpiles across the country.-VNA
