Bangkok (VNA) - Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-Cha on August 8 sent a congratulatory message to Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen for gaining overwhelming support in the general election on July 29, according to Thailand’s freshnewsasia e-newspaper.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Kingdom of Thailand, I have the honor to extend my warmest congratulations to Your Excellency and the Cambodian People’s Party for yet another landslide victory in the general elections”,  Prayut Chan-o-Cha wrote in the message.

The Thai leader said he believed that under the wise leadership of PM Hun Sen and his renewed mandate, Cambodia will continue to prosper in the years ahead.

"Thailand, as an immediate neighbor, reaffirms our commitment to further strengthen the longstanding ties of friendship and close cooperation with Cambodia for the mutual benefits for our two peoples”, he added.

The sixth general election of Cambodia on July 29 drew 20 parties vying for 125 seats in the parliament. According to the National Election Committee (NEC), the election was a success with 82.89 percent of the voters going to the polls, much higher than the turnout rate of 69.61 percent in the fifth election in 2013.

The committee is scheduled to announce the preliminary results of the election on August 11 and the official results on August 15 if there are no complaints.-VNA
