Thailand ’s Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has asked the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and ASEAN for international backing to endorse his country’s plans for national reconciliation.

Abhisit said that he had discussed his plans with UNCTAD’s Director Supachai Panitchpakdi and the Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Surin Pitsuwan, at the recent World Economic Forum on East Asia, held in Vietnam .

He said he asked both leaders to help him publicise his government’s efforts overseas and they have agreed with his recommendations.

The main reason behind the request is that many investors are currently unsure of the country’s stability and have become wary of injecting capital into the country as well as trying to kick start the country’s badly damaged tourist industry after the political crisis.

The plans focus on several major issues including protecting the monarchy, narrowing the gap between rich and poor, investigating the recent violent behaviour of the red-shirt protestors and reforming the media./.
