The Thai Government on October 21 approved amendments to the outdated National Security Act in order to restructure the National Security Council (NSC).

The move aims to help the 56-year-old council to address security challenges in the new situation such as scientific, technological and environmental threats.

Thai Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam told reporters that the amendments will redefine the “national security” term, which is extended to cover modern economic and technological challenges.

The NSC executive structure will include economic and information communication technology security officials plus academics to facilitate the council’s strategic planning, he said.

He noted that the act has not been amended for more than 50 years and revealed that besides structural revamp, the act will adjust roles and authority of the council.-VNA
