Thai police have arrested one of the main leaders of the anti-government protest movement on charges related to insurrection and inciting unrest, a local official has said.
Tarit Pengdith, Director-General of the Thai Ministry of Justice’s Department of Special Investigation (DSI), said former opposition lawmaker Sakoltee Phattiyakul was arrested at around midnight on April 25 at Bangkok’s main airport, where he had returned from a trip to the US.
He added that Sakoltee also faces other serious accusations, including disruption of the election earlier this year.
However, after a few hours in custody, the Bangkok Criminal Court released him on 600,000 baht (18,600 USD) bail.
Sakholtee is a leader of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee, which has been staging anti-government demonstrations in Bangkok since last November in a bid to topple caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.
Other leaders of the anti-government movement face arrest warrants on charges related to the demonstrations, such as blocking roads in Bangkok and besieging government buildings.-VNA
