Thailand calls for election delay

Thailand's Election Commission (EC) has called for the postponement of parliamentary polls slated for July 20.
Thailand's Election Commission (EC) has called for the postponement of parliamentary polls slated for July 20.

The appeal came on May 15 after a gun and grenade attack at an anti-government protest site in Bangkok left at least three dead and 24 wounded.

Hours later, hundreds of anti-government protesters stormed a meeting between cabinet members and vote officials, forcing caretaker Prime Minister Niwattumrong Boonsongpaisan and other ministers to flee.

The caretaker government said that a general election to form a new government is the only way to help Thailand escape from the current political crisis. However, anti-government protesters demanded the appointment of an unelected premier.

Election held in February was later annulled after demonstrators blocked voting in many areas, asking for the establishment of a People’s Council to adopt reforms before any poll is conducted.-VNA
