Thailand, in near future, will be a regional weekend destination and one of the top five Asian sport venues, according to Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul.

The minister told The Nation newspaper that for tourism, the government will push Thailand as a weekend destination for tourists from ASEAN countries. The country will also become the top sport destination in ASEAN and Asia as well.

These projects are part a national strategy aiming at building up the country's image and maintaining Thai hospitality with the hope of increasing arrivals and revenue.

Thailand is expected to welcome 25 million international visitors this year, generating revenue of 1.2 trillion THB, while the domestic market should bring in 700 billion THB.

The tourism sector, which accounts for 10 percent of the country's gross domestic product, hopes hopes to earn total revenue of 2.2 trillion THB next year with 1.4 trillion THB from international market and 800 billion THB from domestic market.-VNA
