At the Government House, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha extended an overwhelming welcome to Fijian Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimara who is on an official visit to the Kingdom of Thailand.

The Fijian Premier was accompanied by two ministers – the minister for agriculture and the minister for fisheries and forestry – who will seek cooperation on various issues from the Thai side.

Gen Prayut said Thailand always deems Fiji as a close and important economic partner as well as gateway to other Pacific Island countries.

Fiji is also a main importer of Thai consumer goods and has high growth potential in terms of construction, tourism, and public utility.

The Thai Premier also proposed that both countries increase the number of flights and two-way trade values.

Currently, Thai exports to Fiji are automobiles and parts, plastic resin, and sugar. Thailand’s trade surplus with Fiji is 49 million USD.

Thailand and Fiji have promoted their diplomatic ties since December 15, 1975. The two nations have exchanged visits of high-ranking officials on many occasions. In addition, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn paid a visit to the island country in 1996.-VNA
