Thailand has become top importer of Vietnam’s tra fish in ASEAN, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

Vietnam’s tra fish exports to Thailand in the first seven months of the year reached nearly 28 million USD, a year-on-year increase of 40 percent, VASEP said.

Vietnam’s tra fish exports to Thailand posted positive growth from the beginning of this year in spite of political unrest in the ASEAN country in the first months of 2014.

International Trade Centre (ITC) statistics revealed that in the first seven months of this year, Thailand imported 10,070 tonnes of tra fish and frozen fillet fish, of which 99.8 percent came from Vietnam.

According to VASEP, Thailand imported tra fish from Vietnam for domestic consumption. The country is also a promising market and a gateway for Vietnam to expand tra fish exports to other ASEAN markets with an estimated total population of more than 600 million people.

ASEAN is Vietnam’s third largest importer after the EU and the US. In the January-August period, Vietnam’s tra fish export turnover to the bloc was estimated to 87.5 million USD or a 13.3 percent rise over the same period last year.-VNA
