Emergency rule was lifted in the northern provinces of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai and the northeastern province of Ubon Ratchathani.
The decision was announced by Thai government spokesperson Panitan Wattanayagorn after the senior security officials’ meeting, stressing that the decision will take effect on the same day.
However, the state of emergency is still kept in place in the capital city of Bangkok and six other provinces.
The emergency decree had been first imposed in Bangkok and some nearby areas since April 7, 2010 to deal with anti-government protests.
The state of emergency has allowed the government to impose martial law, prohibit gathering in public areas, censor publishing and arrest suspects without charge./.
