Bangkok (VNA)Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce has targeted a 10% increase in the country’s fresh and processed fruit exports to 4.44 million tonnes this year.

Particularly, the country expects to increase durian export value to 100 billion baht (2 billion USD) in 2023.

The Thai Government's acting spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, and agencies from both public and private sectors coordinated to propose a total of 22 measures to realise the export targets.

The measures are expected to solve the problems relating to fruit prices, and quantity shortages, as well as achieve the export targets covering four aspects - production, domestic marketing, finding new markets in foreign countries and negotiating with trading partners to reduce barriers to fruit exports.

To ensure the quality of durians, Anucha said farmers in the eastern provinces of Thailand are advised to strictly follow the provincial harvest schedule which is designed to release the fruit to the market when the price reaches its highest point.

Durian growers are also asked to avoid premature harvesting to prevent oversupply./.
