ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan has assured Thailand’s readiness to host the upcoming 15th ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Summit and related meetings.

He said this while insisting, at the same time, that the enforcement of the Internal Security Act during the meeting will not create a negative impact on the event.

All the participating ASEAN leaders and dialogue partners expressed their understanding of Thailand ’s obligation to impose the Act during the 15th ASEAN Summit, ASEAN Chief Surin was quoted by the National News Bureau of Thailand (NNT) as saying.

The ASEAN meetings will be held from Oct. 23-25 in Cha-am and Hua Hin districts of Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces.

The security act will also be enforced in the Dusit district of Bangkok as part of the Thai government’s measures to ensure that the coming ASEAN Summit will proceed smoothly.

Surin said the use of the security law was aimed at preventing the recurrence of last April’s disruption of the 14th ASEAN Summit and related meetings in Pattaya, Chon Buri.

Earlier in April, the Thai government was forced to cancel the 14th ASEAN Summit with dialogue partners in Pattaya due to a disruption by supporters of the anti-government United front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD).

The essence of the 15th Summit includes an announcement on the establishment of an ASEAN Inter-Governmental Commission on Human Rights, the development of the trans-ASEAN transportation network and multilateral talks on global warming, food security and alternative energy.

ASEAN members will also seek talks with China over the issue of intellectual property protection due to its extensive investment in ASEAN nations./.
