Hanoi (VNA) –Myanmar and Thailand on June 26 disposed an amount of drugs worth one billion USD, which were confiscated in regional raids on drug criminals.

The move marked the United Nations Day against drug abuse and trafficking.

Myanmar authorities discarded opium, heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine with an estimated value of 385 million USD in three different locations.

This was the largest amount of drugs being seized in Myanmar.

Meanwhile, Thai authorities also disposed drugs worth 589 million USD, including 7,800kg yaba (caffeine-contained tablets) and 1,185kg of methamphetamine.

Drug production activities have been expanded to meet the rising demand in Southeast Asia region, India and Bangladesh. Raids on drug traders have been conducted in many countries.

Myanmar is viewed as one of the biggest drug producers in the world. Those drugs are often smuggled into other countries in the region. Last year, Myanmar authorities discarded drugs worth 19.7 million USD.-VNA
