The Thai Department of Foreign Trade has projected that Thailand's rice exports in 2014 will exceed 8 million tonnes due to rising demands in many countries.
The Department’s Director-General Surasak Riengkhrua said the department has developed marketing plans for Thai rice in both old and new markets, especially in South Africa and Russia. The plans will be submitted to the government for consideration.
If the plans are implemented soon, Thai rice exports in 2014 will reach 4.8 billion USD.
Thailand 's rice exports as of December 16 last year were 6.4 million tonnes or 4.2 billion USD, much lower than the target of 8-8.5 million tonnes. The main cause of the export decrease is that the price of Thai rice is more expensive than those of its competitors.-VNA
