Thailand will sell 1.2 million tonnes of 5-percent white rice and 90,000 tonnes of tapioca to a Chinese state enterprise under a contract signed on November 20.

Rice bought from Thailand will be used mainly for local consumption and donated to poverty-stricken nations, Bangkok Post quoted Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Niwatthamrong Bunsongphaisan as saying.

He affirmed that the Thai Government is committed to accelerating sales of its rice stock, mainly via Government-to-Government (G2G) deals, and is in discussions with several potential buyers including African countries.

Surasak Riangkrul, Director General of the Foreign Trade Department, said the Government has sold 7-8 million tonnes of its rice stocks over the last two years through G2G contracts.

The Government's latest report puts Thailand's rice shipments at 5.63 million tonnes, down by 3 percent from this time last year.
Rice exports for the full year are estimated at 6.5 million tonnes, with the figure forecast to increase to 8-10 million tonnes next year.-VNA
