Thailand to write new Constitution if draft fails in public vote

Bangkok (VNA) – If a draft Constitution is rejected by the public in a national referendum slated for August 7, a new constitution will be written without using any past constitutions, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha stated on April 12.

According to the PM, the Thai cabinet recently approved 2.991 billion baht (85.4 million USD) to hold the referendum.

The same day, the National Legislative Assembly said anyone who distorts referendum questions will face criminal proceedings.

Previously, Deputy Prime Minister WissanuKrea-ngam said the new constitution could adopt the 1997 and 2007 constitutions as well as the draft from the Constitution Drafting Committee.-VNA
