Bangkok (VNA) – The Thai Government is calling on the International Friendship Exchange Council of Japan (FEC), a non-profit organisation with 1,000 corporate and individual members, to help promote tourism in Thailand’s secondary destinations.

According to local media, Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak recently met with Norio Yamaguchi, chairman of the FEC's Japan-ASEAN Cultural and Economic Exchange Committee, to discuss such matter.

The Deputy PM said the Thai government is willing to support the launching of new air routes linking Thai lesser-known provinces with Japan.

He stated the Thai Government has been promoting tourism in 55 provinces with underdeveloped tourism to help locals increase income, as they offer high potential to develop the sector.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the country welcomed 38.27 million visitors last year, up 7.5 percent from 2017. The number of tourists to Thailand is projected to grow by 7.5 percent to 41.1 million in 2019, generating some 2.2 trillion THB (nearly 70.2 billion USD).-VNA
