Thai Senate unanimously rejected a controversial amnesty bill on late November 11, as tens of thousands of anti-government protesters massed in Bangkok.
All 141 senators present voted against the legislation which is expected to grant amnesty to all parties as well as individuals related to political unrest since 2004.
Deputy Speaker Surachai Lengboonlertchai was quoted as saying that the Senate “rejects this bill for consideration.”
Thailand ’s Lower House on November 1 passed the bill, leading to widespread street protests in the Thai capital over the past days.
The ruling coalition led by the Peua Thai Party on November 9 signed a ratification pledging they would not bring the bill back for discussion again if it was rejected.
However, an estimated 50,000 protesters remained in the city's political centre on November 11 night, heightening fears of clashes with authorities.-VNA
