In the joyful atmosphere of spring, many communes in the central Thua Thien – Hue province are organising longevity celebrations for the local elderly.
This is a cultural tradition of the Vietnamese to express gratitude and respect to the old.
More than 10 percent of the province’s population, or 113,000 people, are at least 60 years old. There are 1,200 people more than 90 years old and 113 centenarians.
Truc Lam village in Huong Long commune, Hue city, is home to 8 centenarians. At a simple but warm ceremony held on the occasion of this Lunar New Year, local people gathered to extend their best wishes to the elderly. “This is a precious gift to us in the new year,” said Vo Tham, born 1912.
Local authorities also pay attention to the elderly’s spiritual health. Various cultural and sports clubs founded particularly for the old in the province.-VNA
