Thua Thien – Hue (VNA) –
A workshop was held in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue on March 12-13 to seek methods of expanding forest certifications for small-scale households.

Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Van Phuong said in addition to the State’s forest protection and development policies, the province has promulgated other support policies to encourage small-scale households to develop forestation towards sustainability and certification.

He said Thua Thien-Hue hopes to continue receiving technical assistance from the Vietnamese chapter of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Vietnam) to effectively implement activities preserving natural resources, biodiversity, and developing the forest value chain according to the forest certification of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

Thua Thien-Hue has a natural wildlife area of over 502,600 ha, including more than 348,800 ha of forested land. The current forest coverage is 56.3 percent.

The province is striving to develop over 16,000 ha of large timber forests by 2020, of which at least 5,000-9,000 ha of forests are hoped to receive the FSC certification.

So far, nearly 3,900 ha of forests have received this certification. –VNA
