Tien Giang (VNA) – The Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang is speeding up the construction of three sluices to prevent seawater intrusion and ensure fresh water for 35,000 ha of cultivated land in Go Cong area.

About 40 percent of the work has been done and workers are trying to finish the construction ahead of schedule, said Truong Hoang Dieu, Deputy Director of the Management Unit of sub-projects in the Regional Technical Assistance (RETA) project (under the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development).

The sluices are expected to become operational by December 2017, he added.

The construction, costing 89 billion VND (3.9 million USD), is part of the project “Greater Mekong Sub-region Flood and Drought Risk Management and Mitigation” funded by the Asian Development Bank (ABD) and the Australia Agency for International Development (AusAID).-VNA
