Lam Dong (VNA) - A man in Duc Trong district in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong has been discovered in possession of two dead tigers, according to Phan Van Thong, head of the local police.

On September 5, the Environmental Crime Division under the provincial Department of Public Security worked with Duc Trong district’s Public Security Division to discover the bodies of two tigers at Huy Hoang 2 furniture workshop, owned by 32-year-old Vo Anh Huy in Phu Hoi ward’s Chi Rong village.

During inspection, police found a tiger’s body infused in wine, while another was stored in a freezer. The bodies were subsequently transferred to Duc Trong district’s Public Security Division.

Huy admitted that he bought the two tigers to present as gifts.

Thong said the district police would collaborate with the forest protection department to conduct forensic tests on the two bodies.

Tiger infused in wine is believed to treat bone, joint and muscle diseases, and is often seen as an invaluable gift in Vietnam.

However, according to Nguyen Xuan Huong, former president of Vietnam Orientally Traditional Medicine Association, the benefits of consuming tiger have not been proven.

Tigers are listed as endangered wild animals. According to Vietnam’s Penal Code, the poaching, killing, and trading of endangered wild animals are illegal and offenders may face up to seven-year imprisonment.-VNA
