Time capsule of gifts goes underground

As one of the activities celebrating Hanoi ’s 1,000 th anniversary, the city will prepare a time capsule for future generations. The selection of objects for the time capsule will take place at various points in the countdown to the anniversary of the capital.

All 63 provinces and cities will contribute a single object each tothe 1,000 ones that the time capsule will eventually hold. Apart fromobjects representing each province and city, the remaining 937 itemswhich represent the country’s cultural characteristics and technologicallevel will be selected by people nationwide.

Objects selected for the time capsule include typical items used indaily life and stored in the 1,000 litre air-tight container, for futuregeneration to know more about life today. The container is made ofstainless steel.

The objects selected by cities and provinces will be typical of theregions they originate from, summarising the culture, technologicallevel and lives of people living there. The objects can be simple,everyday items such as the labels of famous products, magazines ornewspapers showing current events and current trends photographs, coinsor indicators of high technology such as DVDs and cell phones givingfuture generation a profound insight into current life.

The container will be buried in the grounds of Hanoi Museum onPham Hung Street , Hanoi in September. On this site will be a lotusshape monument symbolising the splendour and purity of the Vietnamesepeople, said Vu Phuong, Hanoi Culture Fund’s vice-chair.

He first came across the novel idea to preserve items for futuregenerations while visiting Seoul , the capital city of the Republicof Korea . Researchers and authorities from Seoul will help designand construct the lotus-shape monument as a gift from Seoul to Hanoi.

The organising board will cooperate with 63 provinces and cities tothe regionally representative objects and will also call for the publicto suggest 937 others.

Suggestion should be sent to the organising board at Hanoi Culture,Sports and Tourism Department at 47 Hang Dau Street , or by email toqvhhanoi@gmail.com . After consideration, the board will ask theHanoi People’s Committee to establish a board of leading culturalactivists, and scientists to select the most meaningful items.

In May, the organising committee will announce the list of selectedobjects and an exhibition to display all the objects will be held onAugust 6-15.

Placing and sealing the time capsule will take place on August 15./.

People’s Artist Nguyen Hoang Tuan, Chairman of the Hanoi Theatre Association, noted that while northern Vietnam had 27 puppetry guilds in 1986, only 14 remain today. Many traditional plays and original scripts have been lost, hurting restoration and preservation efforts.

By 2030, the project targets the establishment of shared digital platforms across 100% of cultural sectors.
